Web Content

The internet is a vast and great place to reach people all over the world, or in your local community. You can put your website right in front of your target market. But with more than 1.9 billion existing websites on the internet and even more social media accounts, how can you be sure your website stands out? Outside of digital advertising efforts that send traffic to your site, how can you make sure that your website is different (and better) than your competitors’ when visitors arrive there?

Furthermore, research has shown that 55% of internet users spend 15 seconds or less on a website before clicking away. To prevent more than half of your visitors from leaving right away, you need to have great content.

Here are some key points on how to write a website and creating excellent content for your website:

Know Your Website Audience

Before you write content intended for your site, you need to stop and consider who your target audience is. What are they searching for on the internet in relation to your service or product? Will the content that you are planning on writing be relevant to your audience? Does the current layout of your site provide easy navigation to the solutions or information they’re most likely looking for? When you know your audience, you understand what their needs are.

Use The Inverted Pyramid Model

When creating content for your website, it’s recommended to follow the inverted pyramid model. In the past, most websites used a content model that would entice readers with bits of information first. Website visitors would be teased by little bits of information that would draw them to read more and hopefully read on to consume remaining information.

Unfortunately, that will no longer work with modern internet users who are extremely impatient. If they cannot find what they are looking for immediately, they will leave a site. That is what the Inverted Pyramid Model is for.

Under this model, the main message that you want to deliver is front and center. With this model, you include any answers or information your audience may want as the headline or wherever your audience can see it automatically. You can then provide additional details in the main body of the content. The aim is for you to catch your audience’s attention with your initial content to keep them interested.

You have to start with the most important piece of information that you have and then work your way from there.

Make Your Content Easy To Read

The average American has a middle to high school reading level ranging from grade 7 – grade 9. That may sound shocking, but we’re sharing this because it’s important to adjust your level of writing to the level of the average reader. You want to reach out to the greatest number of people within your target audience as possible.

This means unless you have a certain type of audience whose reading level is higher, you generally want to stay away from using long sentences. How do you measure if a sentence is too long? When the sentence is over 35 words, then that’s too long. Make the words simple and easy to understand. Ask yourself if what you are writing is going to be readable to a kid in the 7th grade. If not, then it’s too complicated for your audience.

Here’s one tip that you can use; focus on nouns and verbs. Stay away from using too many adjectives and adverbs which tend to make sentences longer.

Use The Active Voice

You want to stick to the active voice when you are writing content for your website. Instead of writing, “A book was bought,”  you should write, “Eric bought a book.” It emphasizes the action and it makes the sentences shorter and more suited for fast reading. The use of the active voice is always recommended by writers because it makes the piece more interesting.

Don’t Use Jargon

Keep in mind that your website should be for everyone within your target audience. More often than not, your customers do not possess the same level of expertise in your field as you do as the business owner. You want to avoid using jargon or language that only insiders can understand. Explain the difficult processes and terms using simple language. You’re not going to gain followers or customers if you try to communicate using technical language.

There is always the tendency for business owners to use jargon when talking about something technical because they want to demonstrate their knowledge. But you should avoid using jargon if you can; you can still showcase your knowledge by explaining things clearly with simple language.

Skimmable Text

Visual content like infographics and photos are attractive to people simply because they’re easy to process. But text content can also be made visually attractive to readers! You can still make long-form content “skimmable.” What is skimmable text? This is the text that is broken up by spacing, sections, bullet points, lists, and more.

How many of us know the feeling of reading and then seeing one solid block of text; you start feeling discouraged about reading it right? As if it’s tedious to read. You don’t want your customers to feel that way! What you can do is break your text down into sections. Make the paragraphs around 4 to 7 sentences each. You can also use headings or subheadings to further organize your text.

Use Multimedia

Want another way that can catch the attention of your audience? You can opt to use multimedia to make your content more interesting to more people. Use video or even infographics, to deliver the same content in a stronger way. People remember 80% of what they see! So, you want to use media to convey messages to your audience.

Importance Of Web Content

Some think that it’s possible to remove the written content of a site and just make it more visual. But a site that’s only visual would feel incomplete. The information provided by your site is going to be delivered through text. The steps they need to use your services or purchase your product can only be conveyed via written instructions.

Written content is also the best opportunity to provide internal links to website visitors. Think about the internal and external links which you have clicked on from the content you have read before.

Another reason why text content is still needed is because of keywords. These keywords are crucial for being optimized for search engines. Written content is the organic way to optimize for those keywords. Keep in mind that around 30% of search queries are four words or longer, which means you really need specialized content.

Call to actions are also best anchored in written content. The CTAs must be based on written content because you have to tell your audience directly whatever it is that you want them to do.

Still unconvinced about the importance of web content? Here are a few facts that should convince you:

  • Companies today spend more than 46% of their budget on the creation of new content.
  • A blog is one of the top 3 forms of content in use today.
  • Around 50% of the clicks on SERPs go to the first 3 results.

These statistics show the importance of writing web content that drives results and why it’s important to learn how to write content for websites.

Developing Your Own Web Content Strategy

To effectively communicate with your audience, you can’t just start writing the first thing that you think about. You need to have a website content plan that details who you’re writing for, what you’re writing about, and why you’re writing it.

Here are some of the things that you should note when developing your strategy:

Your Audience

Your Audience

Who are you targeting with your website writing? You need to determine who your audience is before you start writing. You can start by creating a customer avatar, which would describe who your typical customer is. For example, your typical customer might be a male aged 30 to 40 years old in the US. More than demographics, it’s important to know other descriptors like what their goals and pain points are. What makes them want or need the product/service you offer? What is their behavior pattern like online? By knowing who your audience is, you can write content that is tailor-made for them.

Objectives

Objectives

Why are you writing your content? Is it to draw traffic? Do you want to increase your conversion rates? Do you want to build up your brand as an authority? All of those objectives are legitimate but you need to write them down. You will have a clearer direction of what to write about when you know all the specific objectives that you are aiming for.

Your Content Plan

Your Content Plan

Once you are clear as to who your audience is and what you want to achieve with your content, you can outline your content plan. Your content plan should spell what content will be written and when it will be published. With a content plan in place, you will never be at a loss of what to write. This can help if you are planning on establishing a blog to go with your site or if you’re learning how to write content for your website.
