For a lot of us, 2020 was an incredibly tough year.
We mean, there were a lot of events that we never thought would happen. And while some businesses suffered, others who were prepared or were able to adapt, flourished.
But one thing is for sure, the world is rapidly changing.
And there are some trends you need to pay attention to so you can adjust and conquer this new era of social media marketing.
So, we’re going to give you 7 social media marketing predictions for 2021 that we believe you need to pay attention to because it’s going to help you put together a solid plan.
Plus, this way, once the trends become more established, you will be ahead of the curve instead of trying to play catch up.

Again, this is just us making an educated opinion based on the trends we are seeing taking place right now.

1. Online Activity Will Remain High
That’s right, in 2020, online activity skyrocketed as many people were forced to stay inside.
In fact, according to Adobe, online sales reached $10.8 billion on Cyber Monday, the biggest U.S. ecommerce day ever.
As some scientists say, it takes 21 days to form a habit.
Well, we’re way beyond the 21 day mark here in 2020 due to lockdowns.
So, people were forced to use the internet to stay connected.
And while for some of us, that habit was established years ago, for others, it’s a new habit that they have just formed this year.
So these new habits transform into new trends which transform into new long term consumer behavior.
That is why we believe having a component of your business online is a super safe bet in 2021.
2. Competition and Cost Will Rise
We know the competition online is already fierce and some advertising costs are already high.
But the reality is, many companies were exposed in 2020 by having a weak online presence.
And these companies and their staff are still excellent business operators. So we suspect that they will pick themselves up and find a new way forward.
In fact, we believe they are starting to put together their game plans for 2021, right now.
It’s going to be a showdown like we’ve never seen before.
We’re going to fight for attention, fight for engagement, and fight for sales.
And that will cause advertising bids to go up, thus the cost to reach people will increase.
That’s why we’re urging everyone to run now because the race has already started.

3. Short-form Video
How many people would agree with us when we say that video is one of the most powerful forms of content creation online?
But our attention spans are shorter than ever and most users are swiping before we get our messages out.
That’s why short form videos on places like SnapChat, TikTok and Instagram with their stories and reels are becoming very popular.
In fact, some would say that users are being conditioned to expect to be entertained or educated, in a very short period of time.
So brands and influencers who can communicate their messages in 10-15 seconds are more likely to win the hearts of their audience on social media.
And huge brands are already taking advantage such as companies like Chiptole and Netflix, who are using short form video to give their fans a behind-the-scenes look while entertaining them.
The key when creating short form video is to focus on bringing value and not rushing to sell yourself.
And as a BONUS tip, we would encourage you to use short-form video as a gateway to long-form video, especially if you’re in the B2B space.
Because as we know, many B2B brands have a longer sales cycle, so it makes sense to get your audience to consume longer forms of content.
And as a special note: When platforms like Instagram release new features like Reel, then they normally give a bonus in the algorithm for brands who start using the new feature.
So if you’re looking to increase your brand awareness and reach, then that’s another reason why you should consider short form videos.
4. Social Commerce
Now, social commerce is basically using social media to generate online ecommerce sales.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram are making it easier for users to buy products online without leaving their platform.
Reportedly, 71% of people already use social media to get their shopping inspiration. So it makes sense to have an integrated shopping experience.
ASOS is one of our favorite brands that already has started to use Instagram shops.
The shopping experience is very close, if not better, than buying products on their website.
Their store includes very authentic photos, even some videos, all descriptions and you can easily order with a few taps.
So our prediction here is two folded.
First, we’re predicting that many more brands will create shops on social media which will allow for social commerce to become more mainstream.
And secondly, we’re predicting that other social media platforms like Pinterest or even LinkedIn, will start making strides to create more native commerce stores of their own.
5. Augmented Reality Will Continue to Adapt
We got our first introduction to augmented reality, or AR, with Pokemon Go, which uses technology to project virtual computer generated augmentations onto a real world setting.
And it’s transferred onto social media through filters you can apply to yourself in real time while you record footage of yourself.
Usually for a story or post, or even when you talk with someone live through a video call.
When filters were first released, you had to be a brand in order to create them. And most brands usually tie in their logo or campaign with their filter.
But filters have become so popular recently that anyone can make them for others to use.
Which begs the question, what’s next?
What if you could augment yourself trying on different outfits, that YOU choose? That would pair well with social commerce.
But who knows what the future holds for augmented reality, one thing is for sure though, we’re predicting we will continue to become more advanced going into 2021.
6. Marketing Will Become Even More Personalized
Personalized marketing is exactly that. It is personalized to the person consuming the content.
As social media platforms and businesses adapt to online, they are able to merge datasets together, to create messages that align more with users’ interests.
For example, if you know your customer loves music and cars, then you can create a personalized ad that includes these two interesting points.
Lexus ran a personalized ad campaign to do exactly that.
They ran a Facebook ad campaign with over 1,000 ads targeting specific audiences and customer segments. They picked audiences based on imagery that mattered to them and followed through with the car they were selling.
Their campaign reached 11.2 million people on Facebook and led to a 1678% increase in engagement.
With results like that, it’s hard to argue why you shouldn’t try to personalize your messages to the audiences you want even if you have a broad audience.
7. Going Live
Did you know that 1 million users on Instagram watch live videos every day?
That’s right. It’s so popular because it gives users the ability to personally connect with their followers and fans.
People have come to value authenticity over a more refined video. So of course, you have artists doing live jam sessions with their fan base.
Influencers going live and discussing stuff about their day and fashion.
And educators are going live to do real-time question & answer sessions for their audience.
You even have brands like NASA doing a series called “Science Live” where they answer questions from the scientific community.
So it looks like going Live will continue to grow and dominate in 2021.
