Short videos like reels are the BEST way for small business owners to get their brand and product in front of their target market.
But, that’s only if you get up there and film something to post!
The 3 biggest deterrents business owners face when it comes to posting reels are not having enough time, not knowing what to post, and being camera shy.
As far as not having the time, you either have to make a point to prioritize it with the resources you have.
Or, you can outsource it to a professional short video management agency that does it for a living, like LYFE Marketing.
And as for being camera-shy, that’s what we’re gonna tackle in this post.
We’re going to give you 3 easy steps to take to get you comfortable being in front of the camera so you can make reels that capture an audience of future customers.
3 Steps To Getting Camera-Comfortable: How To Make Better Reels
Step #1: Prepare
Know what you’re going to say ahead of time. Whether that means writing a script, jotting down some bullet points, or whatever makes you comfortable.
We remember in a public speaking class back in college, one time they advised against writing a script out for your speeches…
…because they were like, “You’re not going to be able to remember your whole speech word for word.”
Well, it’s important to remember that we are not giving a speech in front of a live audience with these videos.
These are reels. People are only going to see what you publish, so prepare in whatever way makes you the most comfortable.
So long as you have a firm grasp on what you’re going to talk about in this reel, that usually removes so much of the upfront stage fright of being in front of the camera.
Step #2: Create a space that makes you feel good
This could mean several things. This could include creating a little space in your home or office with good lighting that looks nice to film in.
Or this could mean taking a moment to lay out an outfit that makes you feel good, styling your hair whatever it is.
Just keep in mind we’re not asking you to make things PERFECT; we’re asking you to do what’s necessary for you to feel confident.
Savannah Bee Co. is a small business we’ve highlighted before because we think they do a great job with their social media.
They’re very personable, they draw you into their world and brand.
We bring them up because we want to show this reel that they posted where he’s answering a question they got in their Instagram Stories and they’re posting it as a reel.
He’s not sitting at some beautiful desk or in a decked-out home office in his mansion in a suit and tie.
He’s comfortable in his bee-keeping habitat because that’s what makes him confident AND that’s what makes sense for their brand. All we’re trying to drive home here is whatever barrier you have in your mind of, “I need to do this before I can film”, “I need to look like this first”, or “I need to buy this first” – not true. Tear that mental block down because if you have a smartphone and you have air in your lungs, you have all you need to start filming. You just need to figure out what’s going to make you the most confident when you do it. |
And honestly, it’s a win-win because people can tell when you’re NOT confident. It translates on camera so if you’re feeling your best, your audience will too.
Step #3: Practice
Do-overs are okay! Remember nobody is seeing all the outtakes, they’re only seeing the finished product.
So practice, practice, practice until YOU are satisfied with the final result!
Now, again we’re not striving for perfection here, in fact, statistically, raw, authentic videos tend to perform better on social media than perfect, commercial-y looking videos.
So you want them to be real and not staged or robotic-sounding, and if you don’t like a take, toss it! Re-do it! Because you can. There’s less pressure with reels.
So now that there should be no reason you can’t get in front of the camera, we expect to start seeing more reels from you guys on your business pages.
