Instagram’s owner is launching its own version of Twitter called Meta Threads.
And this comes at a very convenient time given the NEW wave of backlash Twitter is receiving.
Days after Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, drew flak for placing a temporary limit on the number of messages users can read on the social media site-
-Meta announced plans to develop Threads, a microblogging software that competes with Twitter.
Why People Are Upset With Twitter
Musk had made an attempt to explain how the restrictions operate-
-stating that customers without a monthly membership will momentarily be limited to reading only 600 posts per day, while verified accounts will have access to up to 6,000.
The criteria were increased to 800 posts for unverified accounts and 8,000 for verified accounts after receiving negative feedback…
…but he eventually decided to settle on 1,000 and 10,000 tweets, respectively.
And this is AFTER the first wave of changes Musk made that didn’t go over well then either.
Instagram Threads
Once Threads launches on July 6th, users will be able to keep their Instagram account and all of their followers from that account.
The launch poses a direct challenge to Twitter, which has been involved in various issues ever since Musk paid $44 billion for the platform in 2022.
Mastodon and Blue Sky, two other microblogging platforms, have seen an increase in users since Musk bought them…
…but neither has been able to compete with Twitter.
However, Instagram has a history of adding new features based on the success of other social media companies-
-and already has hundreds of millions of users who have enrolled.
Are we surprised when Instagram comes out with a “brand new” feature that they totally didn’t steal from another platform?
No, we are not.
Given Instagram’s success rate with these types of features, Threads’ introduction poses a real threat to Twitter under Musk.
With 2 billion users, Instagram is already approximately ten times bigger than Twitter, which has only about 250 million users.
Threads will quickly surpass Twitter even if only one in ten Instagram users give it a try.
What We Know About Instagram Threads
Threads is Instagram’s text-based conversation app, here to replace Twitter.
Communities can debate anything on Threads, from the subjects you care about today to what will be popular tomorrow.
In order to share your thoughts, opinions, and creativity with the world-
-you may build a loyal following of your own or follow and interact with your favorite creators and those who share your interests.
So this is what Instagram Threads will look like and how you can log in with the same username you have from Instagram.
You can opt to follow the same accounts on Threads as you do on Instagram.
This makes it easier for your followers to follow you on this new platform with the tap of a button.
This is what the conversation threads will look like, so you can see it’s very similar to Twitter.
And it looks like when you create a post, you can choose to share with anyone, profiles you follow, or mentioned only.
What Does All Of This Mean For Business Owners?
If you’re marketing your business on Twitter, you’ll want to monitor those efforts very closely in the coming weeks.
The New York Times is literally calling this new app “Meta’s Twitter-Killer.”
Twitter is trying to force its users to pay for verification so that they can see and engage with more posts.
But if its user base doesn’t buy into that, then the brands and businesses posting and marketing themselves on there-
-are about to have a follower base that literally cannot see its content once they’ve exhausted their limit for the day.
And we all know how hard it is to get organic reach as it is.
So if you’re not seeing results on Twitter, it’s probably not worth your time and effort to post there.
Now, if Twitter has never really been a big money-maker for you as far as marketing platforms go…
…then the only thing for you to consider really is whether you want to give Threads a try or not.
Historically, new apps tend to have a LOT of organic reach at the start.
But on the flip side, there’s not usually that many people on the platform yet. And of course, it’s not yet considered as one of the top social media platforms for businesses.
So it’s one of those things where you’ll just have to test it out and see- IF it makes sense for your business to do that.
If you never really saw success on Twitter even in the old Twitter days…
…there’s not much evidence to say you’ll all of a sudden get a lot of customers from the new Instagram Threads.
